These are beautiful artwork from our award-winning Indigenous Discovery Big Book range (LM7432K) which is sold separately – Winner of Educational Publishing Award -Teacher Resource 2022. This ocean themed puzzle set includes underwater animals include a whale, dolphin, jellyfish, manta ray, octopus and a coral scene. The puzzles are set in trays so they can be displayed after completing. Each tray puzzle measures 30.5 (W) x 20.3 (L) cm and features 12 pieces. Suitable for children aged 3+ years.
Working with puzzles is an ideal activity to scaffold a whole host of developmental benefits including fine motor skills, visual & memory skills, categorising, and sorting skills – all whilst boosting their general knowledge through play. Children can progress from these basic puzzles to higher levelled larger puzzles that require them to develop increasingly advanced strategy skills including critical thinking techniques, and problem solving.
About the Artist –
Leanne Watson Redpath is a Dharug dyin (woman) commonly known in the Aboriginal Community as Mulgo, meaning Black Swan.
Leanne is the daughter of Aunty Edna Watson and Uncle Allan Watson, Elders of the Dharug Community. The Dharug are the traditional owners of the Sydney area, with the country ranging from the Hawkesbury River in the North to Appin in the South, over the Blue Mountains in the West and to the ocean in the East. Leanne was born, raised and still resides in Sydney. She is now a mother and Grandmother and has spent her life living, promoting, and protecting Dharug Culture, people, and places. Leanne has been the Director of DCAC (Darug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation) for the past 15 plus years. She started painting at a young age, taught by her mother Aunty Edna Watson and her brother Bundeluk Watson, and is now an accomplished artist and illustrator, winning the national children’s literacy award in 2020 for Cooee Mittigar, her paintings and artwork are renowned by many. Leanne’s artwork and cultural knowledge has taken her on a path only walked by a few. As an artist and cultural educator, she has travelled overseas to promote Dharug culture, language, worked with numerous education facilities, museums, communities, and developers to share culture and deliver art workshops, programs, interpretive projects and educational packages. Leanne works alongside a broad range of Aboriginal groups and consultants specialising in Aboriginal Site awareness, education and Protection, this role includes, community consultation, WHS, landform identification, Aboriginal Archaeology, Consulting, analysing objects, identifying and Recording and protecting Aboriginal land. Leanne’s artwork is inspired by her mother, brother, Dharug landforms, the environment, and her life experiences.
