How does jolly phonics work?

Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five skills for reading and writing.

Learning the letter sounds
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs, such as sh, th, ai and ue.
Learning letter formation
Using different multisensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters.
Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.
Identifying the sounds in words
Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.
Learning tricky words
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

Results that speak for themselves

By learning essential phonic skills rapidly, your children gain confidence, becoming fluent readers who explore different text types and produce more independent writing earlier. As your children continue to build on their knowledge they are able to move onto more creative writing tasks and develop their reading, spelling and comprehension abilities. Teaching these key concepts from the start will ensure that children develop all the skills they need to become clear and confident communicators.
