How does Jolly Phonics work?

Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five skills for reading and writing.

1. Learning the letter sounds 2. Learning letter formation 3. Blending 4. Identifying the sounds in words 5. Learning tricky words
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs, such as sh , th, ai and ue. Using different multisensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters. Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words. Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling. Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

  • Developed by teachers for teachers
  •

    Results that speak for themselves

By learning essential phonic skills rapidly, your children gain confidence, becoming fl uent readers who explore different text types and produce more independent writing earlier. As your children continue to build on their knowledge they are able to move onto more creative writing tasks and develop their reading, spelling and comprehension abilities. Teaching these key concepts from the start will ensure that children develop all the skills they need to become clear and confi dent communicators.
